- How
do I log on to an IT Services computer?
Staff and students
registered to use the IT Services computing facilites can follow
these instructions:

- Press
CTRL+ALT+DEL keys at the same time. This will display the Logon
Information dialog box. Proceed to step 2.
If
the Unlock Workstation dialog box is displayed, then the computer
you are trying to log on to is in use by another user who has
just moved away from the computer. Find an unused workstation.
- In
the Username field, type in your IT Services
User Id.
- In
the Password field, type in the password displayed on the sheet
provided to you by IT Services. The password
should be entered (using uppercase and/or lowercase characters)
as indicated in the sheet.
- In
the Domain field, select IT Services.
- Click
OK button to logon. Shortly the standard windows desktop will
be displayed.
- If you
fail to log on to the system as indicated above, seek assistance from
IT Services staff.
- The
first time you logon, Netscape will be automatically loaded displaying
information how to use your account, change password, view your mail
etc. It is important to read this information.

- How
do I change my IT Services lab account password?
- It is important to change
your password the first time you log on an IT Services computer. You can change your
password here.
- Here you
will be prompted for your IT Services User Id, your current password and the
new password. You will need to confirm the new password.
- Passwords should be at
least 6 characters long. It is advisable to include characters
in uppercase and lowercase, and also numbers. This will make it difficult
for others to guess your password.
- Please
note: The new password will be set for this IT Services User Id. for all IT
services (use of computers maintained by the IT Services, IT Services Staff Dial-up
Service, uploading webpages to the IT Services web servers etc.) requiring
use of the IT Services password.
- Do not
disclose your IT Services password to anyone. In case of doubt do not hesitate
to change your password. Access to your password enables anyone to
view your personal data, and to make use of the resources allocated
to you.
- If you
forget your password call personally at IT Services Reception desk to be allocated
a new password. Valid identification (ID. Card or Passport) must be
presented.

- What
facilities can I access using the IT Services lab account?
- All IT Services workstations have
the following software:

- MS
Word - a word-processing package used for preparing essays,
project reports, dissertations etc.
- MS
Excel - a spreadsheet package used for manipulating numeric
data, preparing charts etc.
- MS
PowerPoint - a presentation/graphics package used for preparing
onscreen presentations, overhead transparencies, slides etc.
- MS
Access - a database package used to manipulate data, prepare
forms & reports etc.
- SPSS
- a statistical package used to analyse and report on data collected
from questionnaire surveys etc.
- Adobe
Acrobat - a program used to convert files to a universal
file format (PDF) may be viewed on any computer having free Adobe
Acrobat® Reader®. PDF files are compact and preserve the
look of the original files.

Adobe PhotoShop - an imaging program used to prepare
and edit graphics for printing and posting to the Web.
- A set
of guides covering the basic skills required to use Windows, Word,
Excel, Access and PowerPoint are available at the IT Services
Documentation web page. These guides may also be purchased from
IT Services Reception desk.
- All
IT Services Labs have direct access to the World Wide Web (WWW) and e-mail.
Almost all labs are equipped with laser
printing
facilities.

- What
should I do when I'm done from using an IT Services computer?
- Do not
switch off the computer when you are ready from it. Log off as indicated
below:

- Close all application
programs.
- Click Start
button.
- Click Log off. The
Logon Information dialog box will be displayed. The computer is now may be
used by another IT Services user.

- My
computer crashed!!! What should I do?
- Hopefully
you would have regularly saved your work during the session. If you
have done so you will only lose your most recent changes. DON'T switch
off or reboot the computer but seek assistance from IT Services staff.

- How
do I browse the World Wide Web (WWW)?
- Double-click
the Netscape Communicator shortcut on the windows desktop. This
will start Netscape Navigator, which gives you access to the World
Wide Web.
- In the Location
field, type the URL (address) of the web site you want to
visit.
- Press ENTER key.
Provided you entered the correct URL, the web page is available on
the web server and there are no problems with Internet connections,
the requested web page will be displayed.
- If you do not know
the URL of a web page try any of the following search engines to
search for information:

- Click
on one of the above links or type one of these addresses in the
Location field in Netscape Navigator and press ENTER key. The
search engine page will be displayed.
- In
the Search field type in the word/s you want to search.
- Press
ENTER key.
- This
will display a screen listing a number of links to sites related
to your search. If you haven't managed to find what you want, try
and use different keywords in your search, or try a different search
engine.
