    The CSC is implementing a new e-mail address format for members of staff registered with the CSC. The new e-mail address format will include the person's first and last names separated by a period e.g. norman.zammit@um.edu.mt

    Members of staff with an existing CSC e-mail address are being requested to obtain their new e-mail address online...more information.

    The CSC is an authorised SMGB outlet. University students are now able to use their SMGB (Stipends) card to pay for printing credits and software at CSC Reception Desk.

    The CSC has extended its document binding service to include plastic spiral binding. This service is available to members of staff and students for university-related work ...more information.

    The first ECDL Test Centre Forum in Malta was held today at University. During this forum representatives of local accredited ECDL Test Centres discussed the development of the ECDL qualification in Malta. The CSC shared its ECDL training/testing experience at University. The event was organised by the British Computer Society (Malta Section) in conjunction with the CSC.

    A new virus called 'Nimda' is circulating across the Internet. Besides spreading via e-mail, end-user computers can also get infected with this virus by browsing an infected website. For more information please read this article by Data Fellows.

    Users of Microsoft Internet Explorer are encouraged to apply a security patch which can be downloaded from the Microsoft site.

    The CSC also encourages all users to update their F-Secure antivirus software. Information about updating F-Secure is available here.

    All incoming and outgoing e-mail to/from CSC mail servers is now being scanned for viruses. Any e-mails containing known viruses are automatically stopped and both sender and mail recipients are informed by e-mail about any quarantined messages.

    It is important to note that the CSC anti-virus gateway is not intended to be a replacement for anti-virus software on the users personal computer. Its purpose is to provide an added protection to users against viruses. Viruses can still be spread by sharing infected files on disks; by downloading files from the Internet or by opening file attachments received through other mail services.

    Academic members of staff may now apply with the CSC for ADSL Internet and campus network access from home. ADSL provides much faster access than normal dial-up and Websave connections. Another advantage over dial-up is that the telephone line used for ADSL can still be used for normal (voice) calls, even while computer is connected to CSC. The service is being provided as a University work resource and is available to eligible members of staff through the AWRF ...more information.

    The CSC has extended its e-mail services to include an Auto-Reply Facility. Users can now set up their own reply message to be automatically generated when e-mail is received in their CSC mailbox.

    Users will typically utilise this facility when they will be away from their e-mail for a period of time (e.g. on Easter vacation or attending a conference). This facility enables users to notify people that they may not be able to answer mail during that period...more information.

    The CSC has compiled a set of guidelines intended to promote effective, efficient and responsible e-mail communication. All University e-mail users are strongly encouraged to follow these guidelines ...more information.

    The CSC has launched the CSC Mailing Lists service. This facility enables posting of messages to a group of users (staff and/or students) with a CSC User Id. University departments (faculties, departments, institutes, committees etc.) may apply to set up and administer their own CSC mailing list/s. Administration and subscriptions to CSC Mailing Lists are done via the web...more information.

    The CSC has extended its computing and printing facilities to the University Library - 3rd Floor. Members of staff and students having a CSC Labs Account, can make use of these facilities during the Library opening hours. Other computers will shortly be made available in other sections of the Library...more information.

    A new virus called 'Onthefly' is being circulated by e-mails with the subject line 'Here you have, ;o)'. For more information please read this article by Data Fellows.

    The Computing Services Centre has updated its F-Secure anti-virus software site to detect and remove the 'Onthefly' virus. The update is available in a folder, called 'fsupdate.exe', that can be downloaded from CSC anti-virus download site.
