- IT Services, in collaboration with the Institute of
Linguistics, are making available the computer labs at CCT Building
(First floor Room 403 & 404) as open access labs during certain
hours. These labs are equipped with printing & scanning
facilities. The open access hours during this semester are as indicated

- F-Secure Anti-virus for Workstations 7.1 which is
also compatible with
MS Windows Vista is now available from IT Services. MS Windows Vista
users who have previously installed F-Secure Client Security 7.10 (due
to expire soon) are encouraged to replace their version with F-Secure
Anti-virus for workstations 7.1

- 10th October 2007
- In September, Microsoft reported that MS Excel 2007
displays incorrect answers for some calculations. For example
multiplying 850 by 77.1, displays 100,000 instead of 65,535 which is
the correct answer. A hotfix has just been released by Microsoft to
correct this calculation bug. We encourage all Excel 2007 users to
download and install this hotfix. Users of other Excel
versions need not take any action.

- IT Services, in collaboration with the Faculty of
Economics, Management & Accountancy (FEMA) and Estate &
Works, has refurbished the
computer lab located at FEMA (Room 222). The size of the lab has been
increased and now incorporates 17 new workstations, laser printing
facilities and some space for wireless access users. Access to these IT

- IT Services, with the support of the Web Advisory
Committee, is coordinating the University Website Redevelopment
Project. The University website is currently being revamped. New design
templates have been developed and a Content Management System (CMS) is
being deployed. The CMS will enable departments to easily maintain
their own websites with accurate and up-to-date information and without
requiring technical programming knowledge ...more information.

- The Computing Services Centre (CSC) has changed its
name to IT Services. The new name reflects the broader range and type
of services that are being provided, compared to when the CSC was
established just over 10 years ago.

- The CSC has been instructed not to accept SMGB
(Stipends) card payments after 30th June 2007. The scheme is expected
to come into operation again as from September 2007.

- The University e-mail service has been upgraded to
support IMAP
(Internet Message Access Protocol). IMAP facilitates access to
University e-mail since all active (both read & unread) e-mail
will
remain available on the CSC mail servers and will therefore be
accessible from different computers and locations. This upgrade has
been accompanied by an increase in e-mail storage quota on the mail

- All students & staff are encouraged to
maintain backups of their e-mail
(and other computer data) on a regular basis. The CSC recommends the
use
of an e-mail backup utility called MozBackup for Mozilla Thunderbird.
The same utility can be used to backup Mozilla Firefox bookmarks. The
backups should be stored on secondary storage media (e.g. USB flash
disks, CDs, DVDs etc) in a safe location

- The E-mail Auto-Reply Facility has been upgraded.
When activating the facility, users are now able to specify a date when
the system should automatically stop sending the message. It is
therefore no longer necessary to remember to manually switch off the
auto-reply following return to the office. It is still possible to
manually switch off or update the auto-reply settings at any time

- The CSC in collaboration with various departments
is pleased to announce the availability of more CSC Wireless Hotspots
on campus. The buildings that have been recently equipped for wireless
access include Temi Żammit Hall (Assembly Hall), Ġianni Borġ Hall
(SLT), Biomedical Sciences Bldg (Pharmacy & Pharmacology), CCT
Bldg (some areas) & the Chapel. Open areas covered by wireless
access include Atriju Vassalli - Quadrangle (area outside canteen),
area opposite HSBC Bank, area between CCT & FEMA bldgs (outside
steps) and area between Biomedical Sciences & the Chemistry
Department Bldgs.
